Misamis University Advances Sustainability Research at INREM 2025
Misamis University actively participated in the 5th International Conference on Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (INREM 2025), held on November 18-20, 2025, at the Acacia Hotel in Alabang, Muntinlupa City. The conference, organized by the University of the Philippines Los Baños - Interdisciplinary Studies Center for Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (UPLB-INREM), was held under the theme “Innovating Through Integrated Natural Resources and Environment Management (INREM): Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainability and Resilience.” It served as a platform for presenting and disseminating research-based knowledge, innovative technologies, and policy-relevant approaches in natural resources and environmental management.
INREM 2025 brought together scientists, early-career researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and students, as well as stakeholders from state universities and colleges, national government agencies, local government units, research institutions, civil society organizations, and the private sector. The conference featured plenary and parallel technical sessions, research poster presentations, undergraduate and graduate research sessions, and side events aimed at strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, research utilization, and evidence-based decision- making.
Misamis University was officially represented by Dr. Russel P. Galindo, Director for Research, and Dr. Yunalyn L. Villantes, University Research Coordinator, reflecting the University’s commitment to research, development, and innovation in alignment with national and international priorities. During the conference, Dr. Galindo delivered an oral presentation entitled “Management Effectiveness of the Locally Managed Marine Protected Areas in Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines.” The presentation highlighted the initial outputs of a research project funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST–PCAARRD), focusing on community-based marine protected area management and its implications for sustainable coastal resource governance.
Participation in INREM 2025 enabled Misamis University to disseminate its research outputs, strengthen research collaborations, and contribute to national and global sustainability initiatives. This engagement aligns with the research and extension priorities of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and DOST, and directly supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Through active participation in international conferences such as INREM 2025, Misamis University continues to advance research, innovation, and partnerships that contribute to sustainable development locally, nationally, and globally.
