Misamis University Rolls Out DOST-Funded Environmental Initiative in the Municipality of Tukuran, ZDS
A project funded by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development, and led by the Misamis University Research Center, in partnership with the Municipality of Tukuran, is empowering local communities to care for Tukuran's seas and protect its marine resources.
On March 17–18, 2026, organizers conducted a two-day event to share project findings and raise awareness of marine life and resource conservation. The event gathered municipal officials, barangay council members, fisherfolk, and other community stakeholders.
On the first day, the research team presented crucial findings from the study titled “Management Effectiveness and Impact of the PALS-MISSTA Marine Protected Area (MPA): Basis for Management Enhancement and Policy Recommendations.” The confirmation of thriving coral reefs, healthy mangroves, and abundant marine biodiversity underscored the MPA's success. Key management challenges and actionable, science-based recommendations were outlined to secure long-term sustainability. These insights, presented by Dr. Russel P. Galindo and Dr. Yunalyn L. Villantes, prompted a dynamic open forum in which participants shared valuable local perspectives.
The first-day session was attended and supported by Hon. Macario V. Tingson, Municipal Mayor of Tukuran, alongside key local officials and partners, including Mr. Romeo Mosqueda, Municipal Communication Officer; Mr. Jovito Ondiano, Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer; Ms. Jessany Jabillo, Municipal Planning and Development Office Representative; Queenie Jean Sarsala, Human Resource Department Officer; Chris Jogn Magallon, Tourism Officer; Said Embrel, Fishery Coordinator; Mr. Danilo Tano, MPA Manager; and representatives from the Philippine Coast Guard, Pagadian City, Bob Raynon Coquilla, and Nico Angelo Hortilano, underscoring strong multi-sectoral support for marine conservation initiatives.
Mr. Mosqueda’s message underscored the critical need for sustained marine conservation policies and inspired active, ongoing community engagement to secure Tukuran’s coastal resources for future generations.
On the second day, facilitators conducted a Marine Life and Resource Conservation Orientation, reinforcing key concepts for protecting coastal ecosystems. Dr. Genelyn R. Baluyos, Mrs. Eden A. Neri, For. Bobby B. Alaman and Mr. Jonas T. Hingco led interactive sessions covering coral reefs, mangroves, seagrasses, threats to biodiversity, and the impacts of climate change. These discussions highlighted the vital role of local communities as stewards of marine resources.
The activity concluded with a community pledge in which residents reaffirmed their commitment to protecting marine life and sustaining coastal ecosystems.
Organizers noted that the initiative demonstrates the strong link between research, policy, and community engagement in achieving sustainable coastal management.
The project reinforces the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by advancing SDG 14 (Life Below Water), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), thereby making concrete progress toward long-term environmental sustainability.
